CHAPTER ELEVEN
TOBY
ll I saw were Marry’s eyes.
Their jade green color sparkled in the light, their beauty out of place here. Tears fell onto her cheeks, and I was sure she was the only one who knew why she was crying. Everyone was too stunned to move, or even to talk.
I suddenly feared they would think she was a spy for the Slayers, which she obviously wasn’t. I shivered, and instantly recognized the feeling of my Follower being too distracted to keep up my identity as Joey. I had to leave. Marry shouldn’t know who I was. No, couldn’t know. But instead of leaving, I stayed, watching her in her friend’s arms, almost hoping she would look up and see who I really was. A long minute passed, and nothing happened, then people started to flee and yell. Marry hadn’t lifted her gaze to me yet, but I knew she was going to when two tough-looking Ravens approaching her, looking ready to fight if they needed to.
“Come with us, now,” one barked, but the demand didn’t have much effect on Marry, she remained, hugging Liz. The two Ravens grabbed Marry and pried her away from Liz, but she didn’t bother to fight back, in fact, she looked too tired.
She dragged her eyes from the ground and looked at me. Recognition, shock, and concern crossed her face, and she searched the crowd, probably for Joey. But he was me. Her gaze fell on me, unflinching, and it took a long minute for her to realize I was Joey; she probably saw the color of my eyes, they were identical whether or not I was disguised.
She seemed confused, but then her face darkened in anger. Whether it was because I didn’t tell her about this at school or because she figured out I was Joey – it was beyond me.
The men dragged her down the stairs, and the last thing I saw was her long brown hair streaming down her shoulders and back. They were taking her to the White Rooms, but I didn’t know if she would stay there without guards absolutely everywhere.
